Muchas preguntas de exámenes B2 son: “What does this refer to?” o “What can we infer from paragraph 3?”.
Emma closed the window and looked at the dark clouds. A few minutes later, heavy drops started to fall on the ground.
- What can we infer about Emma?
- What does the writer suggest about…?
- Which of the following is true according to the text? (no literal)
| Palabra | Puede referirse a… | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| it | un sustantivo singular (objeto, idea, situación) | He bought a new phone. It was very expensive. (it = the new phone) |
| they / them | plural (personas, cosas, ideas) | My parents love books. They read every night. (they = my parents) |
| this / that | una idea completa o un sustantivo cercano; a veces resume la frase anterior | He lost his job and had to sell his house. This was very hard for him. (This = perder el trabajo + vender la casa) |
| these / those | cosas/ideas plurales recién mencionadas | Students face many problems. These include stress and lack of time. (These = problems) |
| one / ones | reemplazan a un sustantivo ya conocido (contables) | There are several options. The safest one is staying at home. (one = option) |
4) this, that, such, former, latter y compañía
|---|---|---|
| this / these | retoman la idea anterior, a menudo con valor de “esto/estos” | The company reduced salaries last year. This caused a lot of tension. (This = the reduction of salaries) |
| that / those | se refiere a algo mencionado antes, a veces para marcar distancia o contraste | His situation is different from that of his colleagues. (that = the situation) |
| such | retoma una idea general: “tal(es)”, “semejante(s)” | He often works at night. Such habits can damage your health. (Such = habits like working at night) |
| former / latter | former = el primero de dos; latter = el segundo | Tea and coffee are popular drinks. The former is more common in the UK, while the latter is more popular in the US. former = tea; latter = coffee |
| Error | Problema | Estrategia correcta |
|---|---|---|
| Ignorar palabras como “this, these, such, it” | Son claves para saber qué está comentando el autor.
| Fíjate en verbos como the writer suggests, some people argue, experts believe. |
a) This = ____________________________Maria started a small bakery in her town three years ago. At first, business was slow, but she didn’t give up. She created a website and started posting photos of her cakes on social media. This attracted many new customers, and now it is one of the most popular bakeries in the area.
b) it = ____________________________ - En cada caso, decide a qué se refiere la palabra en negritas:
a) Many teenagers spend hours on their phones. This worries a lot of parents.
b) Tom and Mike started a project at school. The former worked on the design, while the latter focused on the budget.
c) The government introduced several measures. These include higher taxes and stricter controls.
a) Podemos inferir que Sarah…When Sarah arrived at the station, she realised she had left her suitcase on the bus. She immediately called the bus company, but nobody answered. After waiting for thirty minutes, she decided to go back home.
1) recuperó su maleta.
2) se sintió frustrada.
3) perdió el autobús.
- Une cada palabra con su definición:
a) this (en un texto)
b) such
c) former
d) latter
Ejemplo:
Many teenagers use social media every day. They share photos and videos with their friends.
This can be fun, but it can also be dangerous.
Respuestas ejemplo (orientativas):
b) it = the bakery (el negocio de Maria)
b) former = Tom · latter = Mike
c) These = the measures (higher taxes and stricter controls)
4) a) this → 2 · b) such → 3 · c) former → 4 · d) latter → 1
5) Respuesta libre; comprueba que this/these/such tienen un antecedente claro en tus frases.
