If + Past Perfect, + would have + V3
If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.
A) Estructura afirmativa
| Parte | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Cláusula IF | If + sujeto + had + past participle (V3) | If I had known about the meeting… |
| Cláusula principal | would have + V3 | …I would have gone. |
| Orden 1 | If-clause primero (con coma) | If she had left earlier, she would have caught the train. |
| Orden 2 | Main clause primero (sin coma) | She would have caught the train if she had left earlier. |
Contracciones:
had → ’d · would have → would’ve / ’d have
If I’d known, I’d have called you.
B) Negativa
If I hadn’t forgotten my keys, I wouldn’t have been late.
If they hadn’t wasted so much time, they would have finished earlier.
|---|---|---|---|
| Second Conditional | If + Past Simple, would + base | If I had more time, I would travel more. | Ahora no tengo tiempo → imagino un presente diferente. |
| Third Conditional | If + Past Perfect, would have + V3 | If I had had more time, I would have travelled more. | Antes no tuve tiempo → imagino un resultado pasado diferente. |
If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.
= En realidad no estudié y no aprobé.
Palabras clave de third conditional: had + V3 + would have + V3 y una sensación de “ya es demasiado tarde”.
4) would have / could have / might have
| Modal | Uso | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| would have | Resultado principal (muy probable en ese pasado imaginario) | If I had left earlier, I would have arrived on time. |
| could have | Capacidad u oportunidad que existía | If we had saved more money, we could have bought a house. |
| might have | Posibilidad más débil | If she had known about the party, she might have come. |
• would have → “habría pasado”
• could have → “habría podido pasar” (capacidad, oportunidad)
• might have → “quizá habría pasado”
5) Usos típicos: arrepentimiento y crítica
A) Arrepentimiento
If I had studied harder, I would have got a better grade.
If I had gone to bed earlier, I wouldn’t have been so tired.
If I had listened to you, I wouldn’t have made that mistake.
If you had told me the truth, I wouldn’t have been so angry.
If they had planned better, they would have avoided the problem.
If she hadn’t driven so fast, she wouldn’t have had an accident.
6) Errores comunes
| Incorrecto | Correcto | Por qué |
|---|---|---|
| *If I would have studied, I would have passed.* | If I had studied, I would have passed. | En la cláusula if va had + V3, no would have. |
| *If I had study more, I would have passed.* | If I had studied more, I would have passed. | Necesitas el participio: studied, no la base. |
| *If I had known it, I would go there.* | If I had known it, I would have gone there. | Si la condición es pasado, el resultado también es pasado hipotético: would have + V3. |
| *If she would have left earlier, she arrives on time.* | If she had left earlier, she would have arrived on time. |
| *If I would know, I would have helped you.* | If I had known, I would have helped you. | Condición pasada irreal → had known, no “would know”. |
