Second Conditional (hipótesis presente)

B2 - Intermedio Alto · Unidad 3: Reported y condicionales

Ejemplo típico: If I had more money, I would travel more.

1) Mapa rápido

If + Past Simple would + base verb hipótesis irreal en presente If I were you… (consejos) peticiones más corteses diferente al First Conditional

Estructura básica:
If + Past Simple, + would + verbo base
If I had more time, I would study French.

A) Estructura afirmativa

ParteEstructuraEjemplo
Cláusula IF If + sujeto + Past Simple If I had more money…
Cláusula principal would + verbo base …I would travel a lot.
Orden 1 If-clause primero (con coma) If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
Orden 2 Main clause primero (sin coma) I would buy a house if I won the lottery.

Contracción: would → 'd
If I had more time, I’d travel more.

B) Negativa y preguntas

Negativa:
If I didn’t have to work, I wouldn’t get up so early.

Pregunta (menos frecuente):
What would you do if you lost your passport?

En preguntas, el would va delante del sujeto: What would you do if…?

3) Significado: irreal vs real (First vs Second Conditional)

TipoEstructuraEjemploIdea
First Conditional If + Present, will + base If it rains, we’ll stay at home. Posibilidad real, plan verdadero.
Second Conditional If + Past, would + base If it rained, we would stay at home.

If I have time, I’ll call you. (bastante posible)
If I had time, I would call you.

4) If I were you… y uso de were con todos los sujetos

If I were rich, I would buy a big house.
If he were taller, he could play basketball professionally.

En inglés hablado muchos nativos dicen If I was…, pero If I were… es la forma recomendada para exámenes y escritura.

A) Estructura típica de consejo

If I were you, I would talk to my boss.
If I were you, I wouldn’t ignore that problem.

If I were you…

5) Variaciones: would / could / might

ModalUsoEjemplo
would Resultado principal, bastante claro If I had more free time, I would travel more.
could Capacidad / posibilidad If I knew French, I could work in Canada.
might Posibilidad más débil If she lived here, she might visit us more often.

Piensa:
• would → “pasaría”
• could → “podría (ser capaz)”
• might → “quizá pasaría”

If you could send me the file today, I would really appreciate it.
If you didn’t mind, I would like to leave early.
If we lowered the price, we could attract more customers.

7) Errores comunes

IncorrectoCorrectoPor qué
*If I will have time, I would visit you.* If I had time, I would visit you. En second conditional, la parte de if va en Past Simple, no con will.
*If I would have more money, I would travel more.* If I had more money, I would travel more. Solo hay would en la cláusula principal.
*If I were you, I will talk to her.* If I were you, I would talk to her. Coherencia: if + past → would, no will.
*If he would study more, he would pass.* If he studied more, he would pass. No se usa would en la cláusula con if en este tipo de condicional.
*If I was you* (en examen formal) If I were you…
