Verbos en Inglés

Reflexivos y recíprocos (itself/each other) en uso natural

B2 - Intermedio Alto · Unidad 2: Modales y pasiva avanzada

Reflexive / Reciprocal: itself / each other en uso natural

En nivel B2 necesitas usar con naturalidad los reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself…) y las formas reciprocal (each other, one another) para hablar de acciones que hacemos a nosotros mismos o entre personas.

1) Mapa rápido

myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself ourselves, yourselves, themselves each other / one another énfasis: by yourself, myself evitar calcos: *We saw us sonar natural en contexto, no forzar

I cut myself. (acción a mí mismo)
They love each other.

→ reflexive vs reciprocal.

2) Reflexive pronouns: formas y uso básico

A) Formas

SujetoReflexivoEjemplo
I myself I made this cake myself.
you (sing.) yourself Did you do it yourself?
he himself He hurt himself playing football.
she herself She taught herself to play the piano.
it itself The cat can open the door itself.
we ourselves We introduced ourselves to the new neighbours.
you (pl.) yourselves You should behave yourselves.
they themselves They looked at themselves in the mirror.

    He cut himself while cooking.
  • “Solo” / sin ayuda (énfasis en independencia):
    I fixed the computer myself.
  • Algunos verbos llevan reflexivo en inglés aunque en español no: enjoy yourself, help yourself, behave yourself.

3) Usos frecuentes y expresiones fijas

A) Cuidado personal / accidentes

Be careful, don’t hurt yourself.
She burned herself with hot water.
The kids dressed themselves.

B) Énfasis: “lo hice yo solo”

I decorated the room myself.
He wrote the report himself.
We built this website ourselves.

C) Expresiones comunes

ExpresiónSignificadoEjemplo
enjoy yourself pasarlo bien Enjoy yourself at the party!
help yourself (to) sírve(te) tú mismo Please, help yourself to some coffee.
make yourself at home siéntete como en casa Come in and make yourself at home.
by myself / by yourself solo, sin compañía I like travelling by myself.

4) Reciprocal: each other / one another

Usamos each other y one another cuando dos o más personas hacen algo mutuamente (unos a otros).

They love each other. (se aman mutuamente)
We know each other very well. (nos conocemos bien)
The players congratulated one another.

A) Diferencias

  • each other = el más común, neutro, para conversación.
  • one another = ligeramente más formal / escrito, pero casi intercambiables hoy.

B) Con preposiciones

They were talking to each other for hours.
We looked at one another and laughed.
They gave presents to each other.

Si la acción es “entre personas”, usa each other, no un reflexivo: ❌ *We saw us* → ✔ We saw each other.

5) Contrastes clave: reflexive vs reciprocal vs simple

TipoEjemploSignificado
Reflexivo real He hurt himself. Se hizo daño a sí mismo.
Reciprocal They hurt each other. Se hicieron daño mutuamente.
Relación simple We know each other. (no *we know us*) Verbos como know, meet, marry suelen ir con each other en vez de reflexivo.
Sin pronombre We met in 2015. Muchas veces lo recíproco está implícito; no es obligatorio decir each other.
Énfasis en independencia She travelled by herself. Viajó sola (sin compañía).

Regla práctica:
• ¿Es “a sí mismo”? → myself/himself…
• ¿Es “uno al otro”? → each other
• ¿No añade información? → a veces mejor no poner nada.

6) Errores comunes

IncorrectoCorrectoPor qué
*We saw us yesterday.* We saw each other yesterday. Acción mutua → usar each other, no reflexivo.
*They married themselves in 2010.* They married each other in 2010. / They got married in 2010. marry en este contexto es recíproco, no reflexivo literal.
*She looked herself in the mirror.* She looked at herself in the mirror. El verbo look necesita la preposición at.
*He enjoyed very much.* He enjoyed himself very much.
*We ourselves saw the accident.* (uso raro en B2) We ourselves saw the accident. (énfasis avanzado) / We saw the accident.
