Verbos en Inglés

Énfasis con estructuras tipo cleft (What … is …, The thing that …)

B2 - Intermedio Alto · Unidad 2: Modales y pasiva avanzada

Emphasis with cleft-like structures (What… is…, The thing (that)…)

Reorganizan la oración para destacar lo importante: What I need is a break.

1) Mapa rápido

What + S + V + is… The thing (that) + S + V + is… sirve para enfocar una parte útil para corregir o contrastar común en habla cuidada y escritura

Neutral: I need a vacation.
Enfática: What I need is a vacation.

2) Estructura básica con What… is…

A) Patrón

What + sujeto + verbo (+ complemento) + is/was + foco

NeutralEstructura enfáticaUso
I need a vacation. What I need is a vacation. Enfatiza need a vacation.
She likes chocolate. What she likes is chocolate. Enfatiza el objeto que le gusta.
We want more time. What we want is more time. Enfatiza “more time”.
He said something important. What he said was very important. Enfatiza el contenido de lo que dijo.

Observa que “what” sustituye a “the thing that”: what I need ≈ the thing that I need.

3) The thing (that)… / The reason (why)… / otras variantes

The thing (that) + cláusula + is… The thing (that) I like most is the atmosphere. Enfatiza el aspecto concreto que te gusta.
The reason (why) + cláusula + is… The reason (why) I called is to say thank you. Subraya la causa.
The place where + cláusula + is… The place where I grew up is very quiet. Enfatiza el lugar.
The person (who) + cláusula + is… The person (who) helped me the most is my sister. Enfatiza a la persona.

En habla rápida, muchas veces se omite that/why/who, pero en escritura B2 es bueno incluirlos.

4) Enfoque y contraste con cleft-like structures

A) Enfatizar lo importante

What I like about this job is the flexibility.

The thing I hate is the noise.
(Resaltas el elemento negativo principal.)

B) Corregir o contrastar información

“You’re angry because of the money.”
“No, what I’m angry about is the way you spoke to me.”

What we need isn’t more rules, it’s better communication.

5) Tiempo verbal y concordancia

El tiempo principal suele ir en el verbo be (is/was, etc.):

TiempoEjemploComentario
Presente What I need is a break. Necesidad actual.
Pasado What I needed was a break. Hablas de una situación pasada.
Futuro What I’m going to do is take a few days off. Plan futuro, be en presente.
Modal What you should do is talk to your boss.

Observa que “what…” funciona como sujeto singular → normalmente va con is/was.

6) Errores comunes

IncorrectoCorrectoPor qué
*What I need is is a vacation.* What I need is a vacation. Solo un is; no dupliques el verbo.
*What I need it’s a vacation.* What I need is a vacation. No se usa sujeto extra (it) después de la cláusula con what.
*The thing I need is is more time.* The thing I need is more time. De nuevo, evitar doble verbo.
*What do I need is more time.* What I need is more time.
*What I need are more time and money.* What I need is more time and money. What I need se considera singular → usamos is.
