If + condición, resultado
• Zero: If you heat water, it boils.
• First: If it rains, we will stay at home.
2) Formas básicas y estructura
| Tipo | Estructura | Uso | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero Conditional | If + Present Simple, Present Simple (también: When/Whenever + Present, Present) | Verdades generales, hechos científicos, rutinas. Resultado es siempre o casi siempre igual. | If you heat ice, it melts. If I am tired, I go to bed early. |
| First Conditional | If + Present Simple, will + base verb (o: can/might/may en lugar de will) | Futuro real y posible. Consecuencia concreta en el futuro. | If it rains, we will stay at home. If I have time, I will call you. |
3) Zero Conditional: verdades y rutinas
If + Present, Present
• If you don’t water plants, they die.
• If people eat too much, they get fat.
• If I don’t sleep well, I feel tired.
When / Whenever en lugar de if
- When I finish work, I go home.
- Whenever she is angry, she listens to music.
Zero Conditional = condición + resultado “normal”, general. Muy frecuente en instrucciones:
If the light is red, you stop.
4) First Conditional: futuro real/posible
If + Present Simple, will + base verb
• If I study, I will pass the exam.
• If it doesn’t rain, we will have a picnic.
• If you are late, your boss will be angry.
Variantes útiles
- Will → también puedes usar can / may / might / should en la cláusula principal:
• If I finish early, I can go out.
• If you study, you might pass. - Imperativo en la cláusula principal:
• If you feel sick, call the doctor.
• If you see John, tell him about the meeting.
Es muy común usar contracciones: I’ll, you’ll, he’ll, we’ll, won’t.
• If you study, you’ll pass.
• You’ll pass if you study.
If it rains, we’ll stay at home.
We’ll stay at home if it rains.
6) Errores comunes
| Incorrecto | Correcto | Por qué |
|---|---|---|
| *If it will rain, we will stay at home.* | If it rains, we will stay at home. | En la cláusula con if usamos presente, no will. |
| *If you will study, you will pass.* | If you study, you will pass. | Otra vez: nada de will después de if (en este uso). |
| *If you heat water, it will boils.* | If you heat water, it boils. | Zero Conditional: ambos verbos en presente simple sin will. |
| *If I will have time, I will call you.* | If I have time, I will call you. | Presente simple en la parte de if. |
| *If you don’t will hurry, you will be late.* | If you don’t hurry, you will be late. |
Regla de oro: nunca uses “will” en la cláusula con if en estos condicionales básicos.
