Past Continuous (acciones en progreso en pasado)

B1 - Intermedio · Unidad 1: Aspecto y contraste temporal

Idea clave: Past Continuous = ¿Qué estaba pasando?
Past Simple = ¿Qué pasó?

2) Forma básica

TipoEstructuraEjemplo
Afirmativa I / he / she / it was + V-ing
You / we / they were + V-ing
I was watching TV.
They were playing football.
Negativa I / he / she / it wasn’t + V-ing
You / we / they weren’t + V-ing
She wasn’t listening.
We weren’t studying.
Pregunta Was I / he / she / it + V-ing…?
Were you / we / they + V-ing…?
Were you sleeping?
Was he working last night?

Past Continuous solo cambia el verbo be a pasado (was/were); el verbo principal va siempre en -ing.

  • At 8 p.m. I was having dinner. (¿qué estaba haciendo a las 8?)
  • Yesterday at this time, they were flying to New York.
  • What were you doing at 10 o’clock?

  • I was walking home when it started to rain.
  • They were watching a movie when the phone rang.
  • She was cooking when I arrived.

  • I was studying while my brother was playing video games.
  • She was listening to music while she was driving.

4) while y when

while Introduce acción en progreso (Continuous) While I was walking home, it started to rain.
They were talking while the teacher was explaining.
when Introduce acción corta o nueva (Past Simple), o un momento concreto I was walking home when it started to rain.
When I arrived, they were eating.

Estructura clásica:
• While + Past Continuous, Past Simple
• Past Continuous + when + Past Simple

5) Past Simple vs Past Continuous

A) Una cosa detrás de otra (Past Simple)

Yesterday I woke up, had breakfast and went to work.
(Secuencia de acciones, una después de otra.)

B) Fondo + interrupción

I was having breakfast when my friend called me.
(Acción en progreso + acción que la interrumpe.)

C) Describir una escena

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and people were walking in the park.
