C2 - Maestría · Unidad 3: Léxico y fraseología experta

High-level collocations

En C2 no basta con usar vocabulario avanzado: necesitas combinarlo en collocations típicas como wield influence, pose a threat o broach the subject. Estas combinaciones hacen que tu inglés suene natural, preciso y sofisticado.

1) Mapa rápido

Collocation = palabras que “van juntas” verb + noun: pose a threat, reach a consensus adj + noun: overwhelming evidence, pivotal role noun + noun: value proposition, ripple effect verbo ligero: make/take/raise/bring + noun riesgo: *cause an influence, *strong rain

Correcto (collocation):
“The policy poses a threat to privacy.”

Sonaría raro:
“The policy creates a threat to privacy.” (entendible, pero menos natural)

C2 = reconocer y producir collocations de registro alto en contextos formales (ensayos, informes, presentaciones).

2) Tipos de collocations clave

Hay muchos tipos de collocations. Para C2 en registro académico/profesional, las más útiles son:

TipoEjemplos frecuentesUso típico
Verb + noun wield influence, pose a threat, raise awareness,
reach a consensus, bear responsibility, exert pressure
Muy comunes en análisis, informes, artículos de opinión.
Adj + noun compelling argument, overwhelming evidence,
negligible impact, pivotal role, inherent risk
Dan precisión al describir ideas, datos, efectos.
Noun + noun value proposition, policy framework, ripple effect,
skill set, learning curve, tipping point
Léxico típico de negocios, tech y análisis social.
Adverb + adj/verb strongly suggest, firmly believe, deeply rooted,
broadly accepted, widely recognised
Expresan grado de certeza y extensión de una idea.

3) Verb + noun: usar verbos “elegantes”

Muchos verbos de nivel alto sustituyen al genérico do/make. Usarlos bien cambia por completo el tono del texto.

CollocationIdeaEjemplo
wield influence/power Ejercer poder/influencia de forma activa “Tech platforms now wield enormous influence over public debate.”
pose a threat / risk Constituir un riesgo o amenaza “The new policy poses a serious threat to user privacy.”
broach the subject Mencionar un tema delicado por primera vez “Someone needed to broach the subject of budget cuts.”
foster innovation / trust Favorecer, nutrir, hacer crecer “The company culture is designed to foster innovation.”
mitigate the impact Reducir impacto negativo “We introduced new guidelines to mitigate the impact on users.”
spark debate / controversy Desencadenar debate, polémica “The announcement sparked intense debate among educators.”
reach a consensus Llegar a un consenso “The team finally reached a consensus on the roadmap.”
raise awareness Generar conciencia “The campaign aims to raise awareness about digital literacy.”

Mucho C2 se basa en reemplazar do/make por verbos como pose, foster, spark, mitigate, exert, bear, wield.

4) Adj + noun y adverb + adj: precisión máxima

Las collocations de adjetivo+sustantivo y adverbio+adjetivo dan un matiz muy específico. Cambiar el adjetivo puede cambiar el nivel de formalidad.

CollocationMatizEjemplo
overwhelming evidence Pruebas muy fuertes, casi definitivas “There is overwhelming evidence that the feature improves retention.”
pivotal role Papel central, decisivo “User feedback played a pivotal role in shaping the final design.”
negligible impact Impacto casi nulo “For most users, the change will have a negligible impact.”
deeply rooted Profundamente arraigado “These habits are deeply rooted in the company culture.”
widely acknowledged Reconocido por muchos “It is widely acknowledged that transparency builds trust.”
highly controversial Muy polémico “The decision remains highly controversial among experts.”

Fíjate en parejas típicas: strongly recommend, firmly believe, closely related, heavily dependent.

5) Collocations problemáticas (y falsos amigos)

Algunas combinaciones vienen del español y suenan raras en inglés, sobre todo en registro formal.

Español → inglés literalSuena raroCollocation natural
tener una gran influencia *have a big influence* have a strong influence / wield influence
crear un problema *create a problem* cause a problem / pose a problem
producir un efecto *produce an effect* have an effect / exert an effect / generate an effect
tomar una decisión *take a decision* (UK se usa a veces, pero más común es…) make a decision
subir el precio *raise the price up* raise the price / put up the price
hacer impacto *do an impact* have an impact / make an impact (más informal)

Simple: “The change is bad for the company.”
C2: “The change poses a serious risk to the company’s long-term stability.”

Simple: “The app is very important for users.”
C2: “The app plays a pivotal role in users’ daily routines.”
