Long passives & agent management
“Experts have identified several weaknesses in the system.”
Pasiva larga con gestión del agente:
“Several weaknesses in the system have been identified
by independent experts working with the regulator.
|---|---|---|
| Activa | The committee approved the new guidelines yesterday. | Foco en who (el comité). Más directa, típica de estilo conversacional. |
| Pasiva corta (sin agente) | The new guidelines were approved yesterday. |
| Pasiva larga (con agente + info extra) | The new guidelines were unanimously approved yesterday by the ethics committee after a six-month review.
3) Long passives: patrones comunes en C2
3.1. Pasiva + preposición larga
“The policy has been criticised for its lack of transparency and accountability.”
“The proposal was rejected by several key stakeholders from the education sector.”
3.2. Pasiva + cláusula relativa
“A series of recommendations has been put forward,
which are expected to reshape the entire recruitment process.”
“Two alternative scenarios are being considered,
both of which assume a significant drop in demand.”
3.3. Pasiva en estructuras condicionales/temporales
“If no action is taken in the coming months, a further decline is expected.”
“Once the data have been validated, the final report will be released to the public.”
| “Several irregularities were identified.” “New measures have been introduced to address the issue.” |
| Agente específico | Cuando interesa resaltar quién actúa (prestigio, responsabilidad). | “The guidelines were developed by a team of independent experts.” “The agreement was drafted by the legal department.” |
| Agente vago / institucional | Para sonar impersonal o diplomático, sin señalar individuos. | “The decision has been taken at the highest level.” “Mistakes were made during the implementation phase.” “The issue is currently being investigated.” |
| Agente con valor retórico | Para mostrar oposición, poder, grupos con intereses. | “The proposal was strongly opposed by those with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.” “The report was quietly shelved by the previous administration.” |
Evita agentes pobres como by people / by many people. Mejor: by many observers / by several commentators / by local communities.
5) It-passives e impersonales
|---|---|---|
| It + is/was + said/believed/thought that… | Atribuir opiniones al “mundo”, sin sujeto concreto. | “It is widely believed that the policy will fail without additional funding.” “It has been suggested that the deadline be extended.” |
| It + is considered / regarded + adj. + that… | Introducir evaluaciones formales. | “It is generally considered essential that all stakeholders be consulted.” “It is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious reforms in decades.” |
| It + has been decided / agreed that… | Anunciar decisiones colectivas sin señalar responsables. | “It has been decided that the pilot programme will be extended.” “It has been agreed that further research is needed.” |
Sustituir “We think…” por “It is thought that…” aumenta el nivel de formalidad y suena menos personal, más institucional.
6) Errores frecuentes con pasivas largas
| Problema | Ejemplo incorrecto | Versión mejorada |
|---|---|---|
| Pasiva innecesaria (texto pesado) | *A decision was taken by us to cancel the project.* | We decided to cancel the project. (activa más clara; pasiva no aporta nada) |
| Agente trivial | *The new platform was developed by people in the company.* | The new platform was developed by the in-house engineering team. / The new platform was developed in-house. |
| Ambigüedad por exceso de elipsis | *Once implemented, it was decided that further changes were needed.* (¿qué fue implementado? ¿qué “it”?) | Once the initial phase had been implemented, it was decided that further changes were needed. |
| Demasiadas pasivas seguidas | *The report was written, the data were collected, and the conclusions were drawn…* | The data were collected, and the report was written, before the team drew its main conclusions. |
| Concordancia sujeto-verbo en pasiva | *A number of issues was identified.* *The data was analysed.* (versión británica formal) | A number of issues were identified. The data were analysed.
a) “The government may introduce new regulations next year.”
b) “Independent researchers have strongly criticised the methodology.”
c) “We will publish the findings once we have verified the data.”
a) “The decision was made by people who didn’t understand the problem.”
b) “The project was cancelled by the company last month.”
c) “The proposal was blocked by them for political reasons.” - Transforma usando it-passives:
a) “Many experts think that the current model is unsustainable.”
b) “People say that the reform will be delayed again.”
c) “Managers have suggested that we reconsider our targets.”
a) “A decision was taken by us to reduce staff.”
b) “The measures were seen by many people as unfair.”
c) “Once implemented, it was decided to change it again.”
• uses al menos tres pasivas (una con agente, otra sin agente, otra con it-passive);
• incluyas una pasiva larga con cláusula relativa;
Respuestas ejemplo (posibles):
1) a) New regulations may be introduced next year.
b) The methodology has been strongly criticised by independent researchers.
c) The findings will be published once the data have been verified.
3) a) It is widely believed that the current model is unsustainable.
b) It is said that the reform will be delayed again.
c) It has been suggested that we reconsider our targets.
8) Próximo paso
Continúa con Subjunctive & mandative (C2), donde trabajarás estructuras como “It’s vital that he be informed”, “They insisted that the contract be revised” y otros usos del subjuntivo y mandative en inglés formal y jurídico.
