Negative adverbials + inversion

Seldom / Rarely / Never Little + pasado simple No sooner / Hardly / Scarcely Under no circumstances At no time / In no way Not until + inversion

Regla general:

[Adverbial negativo] + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo
= inversión parecida a las preguntas.

Ej.:
Seldom we see such results.
Seldom do we see such results.

Lo importante es elegir el auxiliar correcto: do/does/did, verbos modales, have/has/had o be.

TipoOración “normal”Con negative adverbial + inversion
Present simple
(do/does)
We rarely see such commitment. Rarely do we see such commitment.
Past simple
(did)
I never imagined it would be so difficult. Never did I imagine it would be so difficult.
Perfect
(have/has/had)
We had never faced such a challenge. Never had we faced such a challenge.
Modal
(can, might…)
They could hardly have chosen a worse moment. Hardly could they have chosen a worse moment.
Be como verbo principal Such behaviour is rarely acceptable. Rarely is such behaviour acceptable.

3.1. Frecuencia baja: Seldom, Rarely, Hardly ever, Never

FormaSignificadoEjemplo C2
Seldom / Rarely Casi nunca / rara vez Seldom do we get such honest feedback from clients.
Hardly ever Casi nunca (más coloquial) Hardly ever do they acknowledge their mistakes publicly.
Never Nunca (énfasis fuerte) Never have I felt so unprepared for a meeting.

3.2. Little = “poco sabía/esperaba”

Little + sujeto = “sabía poco / no tenía idea de que…”. Muy típico en narrativa.

Normal: I knew little about how serious the situation was.
Inversión: Little did I know how serious the situation was.

3.3. Secuencias temporales: No sooner / Hardly / Scarcely

No sooner … than No sooner + had + sujeto + V-ed + than + pasado simple No sooner had we started the meeting
than the system crashed.
Hardly / Scarcely … when Hardly/Scarcely + had + sujeto + V-ed + when + pasado simple Hardly had I sat down
when they called my name.

3.4. Restricciones fuertes: Under no circumstances, At no time…

ExpresiónUsoEjemplo
Under no circumstances Prohibición muy fuerte Under no circumstances should employees share their passwords.
At no time “En ningún momento” At no time were we informed about the change of policy.
In no way “De ninguna manera” In no way does this reflect the views of the whole team.
On no account Similar a “under no circumstances” On no account must confidential data be sent by email.

3.5. Not until…

Not until + frase (inicio) ⇒ la frase principal lleva inversión.

Normal: We realised the mistake only when we checked the final report.
C2: Not until we checked the final report did we realise the mistake.

4) Errores frecuentes

Error típicoVersión incorrectaVersión C2 correcta
Sin auxiliar *Seldom we see such transparency.* Seldom do we see such transparency.
Uso repetido de auxiliares *Never did I didn’t think it was possible.* Never did I think it was possible.
Olvidar “than/when” *No sooner had we started the meeting it was interrupted.* No sooner had we started the meeting than it was interrupted.
No inversión tras Not until *Not until we checked the data we realised the error.* Not until we checked the data did we realise the error.
Estilo recargado *Never had I ever, at no time, in no way…* (todo en una frase) Usa solo 1 recurso enfático por frase.

    • una frase con Seldom / Rarely;
    • una con Little did…;
