Gráficos: line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table Tendencias: rise, fall, remain stable, fluctuate Comparar: higher than, slightly lower, roughly the same Aproximar: about, roughly, just over, nearly Comentar: this suggests, indicates, implies Evitar: listas de números, opiniones sin datos

Data commentary típico:
1) Introducir gráfico · 2) Describir patrón general · 3) Comentar detalles clave
4) Relacionar con tu argumento (what it suggests / shows).

table (tabla)
scatter plot (diagrama de dispersión)
Figure 1 shows a line graph of monthly sales from January to June.
Table 2 presents the survey results by age group.
Verbos para “subir/bajar” rise, increase, grow, go up (subir)
fall, decrease, decline, drop (bajar)
double, triple (multiplicarse)
Sales increased steadily between 2018 and 2020.
Unemployment dropped sharply in the following year.
Verbos para estabilidad y cambio irregular remain stable / remain constant
level off (estabilizarse)
fluctuate (fluctuar)
The figures remained relatively stable after 2019.
Prices fluctuated throughout the period.

Evita “it goes up a lot”. Mejor: it rises sharply / it increases significantly.

3) Describir tendencias: intensidad, velocidad y adverbios

Intensidad / ritmoAdverbios / adjetivosEjemplos C1
Subida fuerte sharply, dramatically, significantly, rapidly, steep
a sharp / steep increase
There was a sharp increase in mobile use between 2015 and 2017.
Sales rose dramatically in the first quarter.
Subida suave gradually, slowly, steadily, slight
a gradual / slight rise
Internet access grew gradually over the ten-year period.
The number of users increased steadily.
Bajada fuerte sharply, dramatically, significantly, steep
a sharp / significant drop
Attendance fell sharply after the pandemic began.
Bajada suave slightly, gradually, slowly
a slight decline
The error rate decreased slightly in the second phase.
Estabilidad remain constant / stable, show little change,
stay at around X
Figures remained more or less constant at around 50%.

Original básico:
The number goes up a lot from 2010 to 2015.

Versión C1:
Between 2010 and 2015, the number of users increased significantly, rising from around 20% to almost 60%.

Más / menos higher / lower than
more / less X than
a greater / smaller proportion
Mobile use is significantly higher among younger adults.
A greater proportion of women than men reported working from home.
Similaridad similar to, roughly the same as, comparable to
in both groups, in all three countries
Results for Spain and Italy are roughly the same.
In both groups, satisfaction levels remain high.
Contraste whereas, while, by contrast, unlike
in contrast to, on the other hand
While younger users prefer mobile devices, older respondents tend to use laptops.
By contrast, offline sales remained relatively stable.
Superlativo the highest / lowest, the most / least
X accounts for the largest share
Online advertising accounts for the largest share of the budget.

Necesitas aproximar y usar hedging.

FunciónExpresiones típicasEjemplo
Aproximar cantidades about, around, roughly, approximately
just over / just under, nearly, almost
Just over 40% of respondents reported working remotely at least once a week.
Nearly half of the participants completed the course.
Interpretar con cautela seems to, appears to, tends to
may suggest, might indicate, could imply
The increase in sales may suggest that the new marketing strategy is effective.
The data seem to indicate a growing preference for online learning.
Relacionar con tu argumento this suggests that…, this supports the idea that…
this is consistent with…, this contrasts with…
This pattern is consistent with previous studies on digital habits.
These results support the idea that flexibility improves job satisfaction.

Comentario completo C1:

As shown in Figure 2, the proportion of remote workers increased from around 10% in 2018 to almost 40% in 2022. This substantial rise suggests that remote work has become a mainstream option rather than an exception.

  • Usar tiempo presente simple básico para todo: “it goes up… it goes down…” sin variación.
  • Mezclar opinión pura (“I think this is good”) con descripción de datos sin separar claramente comentario de interpretación.

Débil:
In this graph, it goes up from 10 to 50 and then it goes down to 30. I think this is bad.

Mejor C1:
Figure 1 shows that the number of users rose from about 10 to 50 between 2015 and 2019, before falling back to around 30 in 2020. This pattern suggests that the initial growth was not sustainable in the long term.

Piensa siempre en tres niveles: describir (qué pasa) → comparar (con qué) → interpretar (qué significa).

7) Mini-práctica

    a) Between 2010 and 2015, the number of users ________ ________, from 5% to 30%.
    b) After 2018, unemployment ________ ________ and stayed at around 4%.
    c) Sales ________ ________ during the first half of the year, with several ups and downs.
  2. Reescribe estas frases básicas en versión C1:
    a) The line goes up a lot and then goes down a little.
    b) Group A is bigger than Group B.
    c) The numbers are almost the same in 2019 and 2020.

Usa expresiones como gradually, sharply, remain stable, this suggests…

    Incluye:
    – Introducción del gráfico/tabla (Figure / Table).
    – Tendencia general.
    – Una comparación clave.
    – Una interpretación con cautela (may suggest / seems to indicate…).

Respuestas ejemplo (orientativas):

1) a) increased sharply / rose significantly
b) fell slightly / decreased gradually
c) fluctuated considerably / varied noticeably

2) a) The line rises sharply and then falls slightly.
b) The proportion in Group A is considerably higher than in Group B.
c) Figures for 2019 and 2020 are roughly the same.

3) (posible)
As shown in the bar chart, Category A accounts for about 20% of responses, whereas Categories B and C each represent roughly 40%. In other words, B and C are twice as common as A.

4) (posible)
The line graph shows that the number of users increased gradually from 2015 to 2019. In 2020, however, there was a sharp decline. After this drop, figures remained relatively stable over the next two years. This pattern may suggest that the market reached a saturation point after the initial growth period.
