Binomials y trinomials (by and large, bits and pieces…)
Los binomials y trinomials son expresiones fijas de dos o tres palabras (by and large, bits and pieces, back and forth) que dan ritmo y naturalidad a tu inglés C1.
1) Mapa rápido
Normal: I’m very tired of this.
Más idiomático: I’m sick and tired of this.
Normal: We discussed many small details.
Más idiomático: We went through all the bits and pieces.
El significado suele ser claro por contexto, pero el efecto es mucho más natural y fluido.
Piensa en ellos como chunks que memorizas “de memoria muscular”: siempre con el mismo orden.
2) Tipos de binomials frecuentes
Muchos binomials siguen patrones: unidos por and / or, con rima, sonido parecido o contraste.
| Tipo | Ejemplos | Uso / significado |
|---|---|---|
| Contraste / oposición | black and white pros and cons sooner or later now and then | black and white: en términos claros, sin matices. pros and cons: ventajas y desventajas. sooner or later: tarde o temprano. now and then: de vez en cuando. |
| Intensificación / énfasis | safe and sound alive and well peace and quiet sick and tired | safe and sound: sano y salvo. peace and quiet: paz, sin ruido/estrés. sick and tired: harto / muy cansado de algo. |
| Rima / aliteración | odds and ends bits and pieces back and forth here and there | odds and ends: cosas sueltas / chismes. bits and pieces: partes pequeñas, detalles sueltos. back and forth: de un lado a otro, ida y vuelta. |
| Secuencia / orden | first and foremost step by step trial and error | first and foremost: antes que nada / sobre todo. trial and error: prueba y error. step by step: paso a paso. |
| “Cantidad” / repetición | again and again time and time again over and over | Todas expresan repetición fuerte: una y otra vez. |
En writing más formal, algunos binomials (first and foremost, by and large) dan un toque avanzado sin sonar demasiado coloquiales.
| We’ll support the team, win, lose or draw. |
| here, there and everywhere | En todas partes. | There are cameras here, there and everywhere. |
| on and on and on | Repetición exagerada, sin parar. | He talked on and on and on about his project. |
| sink or swim (no trinomial pero similar) | Fórmula fija: fracasar o salir adelante. | When you move abroad, you just have to sink or swim. |
| blood, sweat and tears | Mucho esfuerzo, sacrificio. | The company was built with blood, sweat and tears. |
We worked day in, day out, putting in blood, sweat and tears to finish the project.
4) Orden fijo y errores típicos
La mayoría de estos grupos tienen un orden casi fijo. Cambiarlo suena raro o directamente incorrecto.
| Incorrecto | Correcto | Comentario |
|---|---|---|
| *white and black thinking* | black and white thinking | Orden fijo por ritmo y frecuencia. |
| *quiet and peace* | peace and quiet | La versión natural es “peace and quiet”. |
| *tired and sick of this* | sick and tired of this | El binomial “oficial” es sick and tired. |
| *large and by* | by and large | Significa “en general”. No se invierte. |
| *pieces and bits of information* | bits and pieces of information | De nuevo, orden fijo por uso. |
Para aprenderlos, repítelos en voz alta. El oído se acostumbra al ritmo correcto y así evitas invertir el orden.
