Register & tone (formal, neutral, coloquial)

C1 - Avanzado · Unidad 3: Léxico de alta precisión

Register & tone (formal, neutral, coloquial – ajustes)

A nivel C1 no solo importa qué dices, sino cómo lo dices. Debes poder cambiar entre registro formal, neutro y coloquial según el contexto: ensayo, email de trabajo, chat, presentación, etc.

1) Mapa rápido de registros

Formal: essays, reports, job applications Neutral: news, presentations, emails estándar Colloquial: chats, mensajes, speech informal No contractions vs contractions phrasal verbs vs Latin verbs Evitar mezclas raras de registro

Formal: Children frequently engage in online activities.
Neutral: Children often spend time online.
Coloquial: Kids are online all the time.

RasgoFormalNeutralColloquial
Contracciones No (do not, cannot, it is) Mixto (it's fine / it is also fine) Muchas contracciones (it's, gonna*, wouldn't)
Vocabulario Más “latín”: purchase, request, obtain, assist Palabras comunes: buy, ask for, get, help Slang / expresiones: stuff, guys, awesome, kinda
Pronombres Menos “you” directo; más estructuras impersonales “you / we” aceptables “you guys, we all, everybody” muy comunes
Oraciones Más largas y complejas, con conectores formales Claridad > complejidad Frases cortas, interrupciones, repeticiones
Marcas de opinión It could be argued that…, it appears that… I think, I believe I guess, I feel like, you know

Formal: It is widely acknowledged that social media impact mental health.
Neutral: Many people recognise that social media affect mental health.
Coloquial: People kinda know social media mess with your head.

3) Cambios léxicos frecuentes (formal ↔ neutro ↔ coloquial)

Mismos significados, diferente registro. Muy útil para transformar frases en exámenes.

FormalNeutralColloquial
purchase buy get
assist (ayudar) help give you a hand
request ask for ask (en chat)
cease stop quit
encounter difficulties have problems have a hard time
utilise use use (no cambio)
children / adolescents young people kids / teenagers
in addition also plus
therefore so so (en speech)

En writing C1, mezcla de vez en cuando vocabulario formal y neutro, pero evita palabras claramente coloquiales como stuff, a bunch of, kinda, super.

4) Contracciones, primera persona y tono

Dos ajustes rápidos para cambiar el tono: uso de contracciones y de “I / you / we”.

AspectoFormalNeutral / coloquial
Contracciones It is not clear…
They have not considered…

Primera persona It could be argued that…

“You” general People often feel…

Marcadores de opinión It appears that…

I guess…, I feel like…, honestly…

Formal (essay): This essay will discuss the impact of social media on teenagers.
Neutral (presentation): In this presentation, I’ll talk about how social media affect teenagers.
Coloquial (YouTube): Today I’m gonna talk about how social media mess with teenagers’ lives.

5) Evitar mezclas extrañas de registro

Uno de los errores más típicos de nivel avanzado es mezclar lenguaje muy formal con expresiones demasiado coloquiales.
