Subjunctive (It’s vital that…, be/should + base form)
It’s essential that he be on time. A nivel C1 es clave controlar estas estructuras.
1) Mapa rápido
It is essential that he be informed immediately.
They recommended that she should stay at home.
The judge ordered that the men be released.
|---|---|---|
| It is + adj + that + sujeto + base form | It is essential that everyone be on time. It is vital that she stay calm. | Sin -s en tercera persona: no decimos *she stays* aquí. |
| Sujeto + verb (mandar, pedir, etc.) + that + sujeto + base form | We insist that he apologise immediately. The doctor recommended that she rest. |
| Passive: It was + decided/ordered + that + sujeto + base form | It was decided that the meeting be postponed. It was ordered that the suspect be released. |
Base form significa: sin -s, sin -ed, sin to. El verbo aparece como en el diccionario: be, go, stay, report…
3) Subjuntivo puro vs estructura con should
| Tipo | Ejemplos | Matiz |
|---|---|---|
| Subjuntivo “puro” | They suggested that he resign. It is crucial that the report be accurate. |
| Estructura con should | They suggested that he should resign. It is crucial that the report should be accurate. |
| Indicativo simple (menos formal) | They suggested that he resigned. (puede sonar ambiguo) They suggested he resign. (subjuntivo sin “that”) | En inglés hablado informal se puede escuchar indicativo, pero a nivel C1, subjuntivo o should dan más precisión. |
• usar subjuntivo puro con be (that it be done)
|---|---|---|
| Órdenes / exigencias | demand, insist, order, require, decree, command | They demanded that he pay immediately. The law requires that every vehicle be registered. |
| Sugerencias / recomendaciones | suggest, recommend, propose, advise | The committee recommended that the project be cancelled. They proposed that we meet again next week. |
| Adjetivos de importancia / urgencia | essential, vital, important, crucial, necessary, imperative | It is vital that he be informed. It is imperative that all staff attend the meeting. |
| Expresiones impersonales | It is suggested / recommended / proposed that… | It was suggested that the deadline be extended. It has been proposed that the company should relocate. |
Si puedes sustituir por “It’s important/necessary that…”, probablemente el subjuntivo sea una opción natural.
5) Otras áreas donde aparece el subjuntivo
Además del mandativo, el subjuntivo aparece en:
| Tipo | Ejemplos | Comentario |
|---|---|---|
| Expresiones fijas (fórmulas) | God save the King./Heaven forbid. So be it./Be that as it may… | Formas congeladas, muy idiomáticas; no intentes “variarlas”. |
| After if, literario | If need be, we can postpone the launch. If that be the case, we will reconsider. |
| After lest (para evitar) | He spoke quietly, lest anyone hear him.
|---|---|---|
| *It is essential that he arrives on time.* | Aquí se espera subjuntivo (o should), no indicativo. | It is essential that he arrive on time. o: …that he should arrive on time. |
| *They demanded that the company pays compensation.* | pays rompe el patrón mandativo. | They demanded that the company pay compensation. o: …that the company should pay compensation. |
| Uso del subjuntivo en contextos coloquiales donde suena “demasiado” | *I suggest that he be more careful* en conversación super informal puede sonar pesado. | En conversación: I think he should be more careful. |
| Confundir with if + past simple (condicional) | *If it is vital that he be here, we call him.* (mal conectado) | If it is vital that he be here, we should call him. (o: If it’s so important for him to be here…) |
| Intentar usar subjuntivo con verbos que no lo piden | *I hope that he be happy.* → verbo hope no genera mandative subjunctive. | I hope (that) he is happy. (indicativo normal) |
