Reported speech = decimos lo que otro dijo Backshift = mover el tiempo un “paso atrás” Cambios: now→then, today→that day, here→there… Modales: will→would, can→could, may→might…

Directo: “I’m leaving tomorrow,” she said.
Periodístico: She said she was leaving the next day.
Actualidad / foco en vigencia: She says she is leaving tomorrow.

“I am tired.” He said (that) he was tired. present simple/continuous → past
“I bought a car.” She said (that) she had bought a car. past simple → past perfect
“I have finished.” He said (that) he had finished. present perfect → past perfect
“I will call you.” She said (that) she would call me. will → would

Hecho todavía cierto → sin backshift Directo: “I live in London,” she said.
Reportado: She said (that) she lives in London.
Todavía vive allí → mantener present simple suena natural.
Hecho ya no vigente / perspectiva pasada → con backshift She said (that) she lived in London at the time.
Noticias recientes / estilo de prensa The minister said he will resign next week.
The minister said he would resign next week.
will mantiene la declaración “viva”; would la reubica claramente en pasado (más neutral/objetivo).
Verdades generales Darwin claimed that species evolve by natural selection.

4) Cambios de tiempo, lugar y deíxis (now/then, here/there…)

now then, at that time “ahora” en el momento de hablar → “entonces” desde el exterior.
today that day “hoy” → “ese día”.
yesterday the day before / the previous day “ayer” → “el día anterior”.
tomorrow the next day / the following day “mañana” → “el día siguiente”.
here there Depende del contexto espacial.
this / these that / those Demostrativos cambian en función de la “distancia”.

Directo: “I’ll call you tomorrow if I arrive here on time.”
Reportado: He said (that) he would call me the next day if he arrived there on time.

ElementoEjemploEfecto
Modales backshifted Directo: “The plan will solve the problem.”
Reportado: He claimed the plan would solve the problem.
Modales que no cambian must, might, could, should a menudo permanecen:
She said the meeting might be cancelled.
Se mantienen porque ya son formas “distanciadas”.
Reporting verbs precisos admit, deny, claim, argue, suggest, insist, point out…
The company denied that the data had been leaked.
Backshift parcial She said she had felt nervous but she feels better now.

*He said he was living in London now.* (pero todavía vive allí y hablas hoy) Backshift innecesario + “now” crea conflicto de tiempos. He said he lives in London. (sigue siendo verdad)
o: He said he was living in London at the time. (si ya no vive allí)
*She said the Earth was round.* (en texto científico) Suena extraño porque la Tierra sigue siendo redonda. She said (that) the Earth is round.
Confundir tiempos al mezclar pasado y presente Ejemplo caótico: *He said he had worked there since 2010 and he likes it now.* Mantén la línea temporal clara:
He said he had worked there since 2010 and that he liked it.
o, si todavía es cierto: He says he has worked there since 2010 and he likes it.
Olvidar cambiar marcadores de tiempo *She said she had finished the report yesterday.* (desde el viewpoint de hoy) She said she had finished the report the day before.

7) Mini-práctica

  1. Convierte a reported speech eligiendo si haces backshift total o parcial (justifica mentalmente tu elección):
    a) “I’m starting a new job next month,” she said yesterday.
    b) “The company is in serious trouble,” the analyst said last week.
    c) “We will publish the results tomorrow,” the researchers said on Monday.
    a) “We have nothing to hide,” the CEO said.
    → The CEO ____________________________________________

    b) “The situation is improving,” officials claimed yesterday.
    → Officials ____________________________________________

    c) “We might close the factory here,” the manager admitted.
    → The manager ____________________________________________
  3. Ajusta marcadores de tiempo y lugar:
    a) “I will finish this report today,” he said yesterday.
→ He said he would finish ________________________________.

    b) “We met here two days ago,” she said on Friday.
→ She said they had met ________________________________.

    c) “I’ll see you tomorrow at this time,” he told me on Tuesday.
→ He told me he would see me _____________________________.
    a) A scientific article reporting Einstein’s words about physics.
    b) A breaking news story written the same day the minister speaks.
    c) A historical novel describing a conversation that happened 200 years ago.
    • 2 reporting verbs diferentes (claim, admit, argue, suggest…)

Respuestas ejemplo (orientativas):
1) a) She said (that) she was starting a new job the following month. (backshift completo)
También posible si sigue siendo cierto: She said she is starting a new job next month.
b) The analyst said (that) the company was in serious trouble. (probable backshift)
c) The researchers said they would publish the results the next day.

2) a) The CEO said/insisted that the company had nothing to hide.
b) Officials claimed that the situation was improving.
c) The manager admitted that they might close the factory there.

3) a) He said he would finish the report that day.
b) She said they had met there two days before / the previous Wednesday (dependiendo del contexto exacto).
c) He told me he would see me the next day at the same time.

4) Posible razonamiento:
a) M → Las leyes de la física siguen siendo válidas: “Einstein argued that time is relative.”
