Las participle clauses usan V-ing o V-ed/V3 para expresar tiempo, causa, condición o resultado de forma más compacta que con oraciones completas con when, because, if…
1) Mapa rápido
When he arrived at the hotel, he called me.
➜ Arriving at the hotel, he called me.
Because she was tired, she went to bed early.
➜ Being tired, she went to bed early.
Pregunta clave: “¿Puedo cambiar when/because/after + sujeto + be por un participio (V-ing/V-ed) sin cambiar el sujeto?”
2) Tipos de participle clauses: V-ing vs V-ed
Hay dos formas básicas:
| Tipo | Forma | Ejemplo | Comentario |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activa | V-ing (present participle) | Walking to work, I listened to a podcast. Being tired, she decided to stay at home. | El sujeto realiza la acción. |
| Pasiva | V-ed / V3 (past participle) | Built in 1920, the house is now a museum. Surprised by the news, he didn’t know what to say. | El sujeto recibe la acción (es “afectado”). |
3) Participle clauses de tiempo (when/while/after)
Muy típico: sustituir when / while / after + sujeto + verbo por V-ing.
| Oración completa | Participle clause | Relación |
|---|---|---|
| When I was walking home, I saw an accident. | Walking home, I saw an accident. | Tiempo (“mientras caminaba a casa”). |
| While she was studying, she fell asleep. | Studying, she fell asleep. | Tiempo/simultaneidad. |
| After he finished his work, he went out with friends. | Finishing his work, he went out with friends. Having finished his work, he went out with friends. | Tiempo (anterioridad). Having + V3 enfatiza “después de haber…”. |
| Before you leave, check your email. | Before leaving, check your email. | Tiempo (“antes de salir”). |
Con after/before es muy común usar: After doing…, Before going….
También pueden expresar causa (equivalente a because/since/as) o algo parecido a un resultado / reacción.
Causa:
Being tired, she went to bed early.
(= Because she was tired, she went to bed early.)
Not knowing what to say, he stayed quiet.
(= Because he didn’t know what to say, he stayed quiet.)
Resultado / reacción:
Shocked by the news, they didn’t say a word.
(= They were shocked by the news, so they didn’t say a word.)
- Being late, he took a taxi. (¿Por qué tomó un taxi?)
- Frustrated by the situation, she decided to quit. (estado → reacción)
Not + V-ing o Not + V-ed es muy útil: Not having enough money, they cancelled the trip.
A) Condición (similar a IF)
Used correctly, this app can save you a lot of time.
(= If it is used correctly, this app can save you a lot of time.)
Given more time, we would finish the project.
(= If we were given more time, we would finish the project.)
B) Contraste (aunque…) – muy frecuente en estilo escrito
Living far away, he visits his family quite often.
(= Although he lives far away, he visits his family quite often.)
Being very young, she is surprisingly mature.
(= Although she is very young, she is surprisingly mature.)
|---|---|---|
| *Walking to school, it started to rain.* | Walking to school, I got caught in the rain. As I was walking to school, it started to rain. |
| *Being in a hurry, the bus was missed.* | Being in a hurry, we missed the bus. | ¿Quién tenía prisa? “we”, no “the bus”. El sujeto debe coincidir. |
| *Finished his work, he went home.* | Having finished his work, he went home. After finishing his work, he went home. | “Finished” sin having/being suena incompleto; mejor usar Having finished o After finishing. |
| *Because being tired, she went to bed early.* | Being tired, she went to bed early. Because she was tired, she went to bed early. | No mezcles “because” + participio. O usas because + oración, o solo la participle clause. |
| *After to finish the exam, he left the room.* | After finishing the exam, he left the room. After he finished the exam, he left the room. | Después de after usamos V-ing o una oración completa, no to + infinitivo. |
