Secuenciadores y estilo narrativo (while/meanwhile/whereas)

Secuenciadores y estilo narrativo (while / meanwhile / whereas)

first, then, after that, finally while = mientras (al mismo tiempo) meanwhile = mientras tanto whereas = mientras que (contraste) at first / in the end

Piensa en 3 niveles de organización:

  • Secuencia: first, then, after that, finally…
  • Simultaneidad: while, meanwhile…
  • Contraste: whereas, while (en uso contrastivo), however…

En narrativa B2, no basta con “and, and, and…”.

ConectorUsoEjemplo
first / firstly primer paso / evento First, we checked into the hotel.
then / after that siguiente paso en la historia Then we went out for dinner.
later / afterwards un poco más tarde Later, we met some friends in a bar.
at first al principio (suele ir con cambio de situación) At first, I didn’t like the city, but later I loved it.
in the end final de la historia (resultado) In the end, we decided to stay an extra day.

3) While para acciones simultáneas

while = mientras (dos acciones al mismo tiempo). Muy común con Past Continuous en narrativa.

PatrónEjemploComentario
While + sujeto + verbo (en progreso), acción principal While I was walking home, it started to rain. Acción larga (caminar) + evento puntual (empezar a llover).
Acción principal + while + sujeto + verbo I hurt my ankle while I was running in the park.
While + dos acciones en progreso While she was cooking, he was setting the table.

✔ While I was driving, I listened to music.
✘ *While I was knowing her… (usa mejor When I first met her…)

4) Meanwhile: mientras tanto (conecta oraciones)

I was trying to call him. Meanwhile, he was sending me a text. Cambia ligeramente el foco de la escena.
Oración 1. Oración 2, meanwhile. The children were playing outside. The adults, meanwhile, were preparing dinner. “Mientras tanto, por su parte, los adultos…”
Oración 1. In the meantime, oración 2. I’ll finish the report. In the meantime, you can check the figures. in the meantime = sinónimo cercano, algo más formal.

Sujeto + verbo, whereas + sujeto + verbo My brother loves parties, whereas I prefer staying at home. Contraste entre dos personas.
Whereas + oración 1, oración 2 Whereas my sister is very organised, I’m quite disorganised. Primero enfocas el contraste y luego el resultado.
Comparar lugares / cosas London is hectic, whereas my hometown is very quiet. Contraste entre dos contextos.

While vs Whereas (contraste)
While I enjoy travelling, my partner prefers staying at home.

6) Estilo narrativo: ejemplo completo

A) Versión básica (pobre)

I arrived at the airport. I waited for my flight. My friend was at home. He packed his suitcase. We met later.

B) Versión mejorada con secuenciadores y conectores

First, I arrived at the airport and checked in. While I was waiting for my flight, I read a book and listened to music. Meanwhile, my friend was still at home, packing his suitcase in a hurry. He loves doing everything at the last minute, whereas I always arrive very early. In the end, we met at the gate just before boarding.

7) Errores comunes

IncorrectoCorrectoPor qué
*Meanwhile I was walking home, it started to rain.* While I was walking home, it started to rain. meanwhile no introduce cláusulas con sujeto + verbo igual que while.
*I was calling him, while he sent me a message.* (simultaneidad) I was calling him while he was sending me a message.
*My sister is tall, while my brother is short.* (texto formal) My sister is tall, whereas my brother is short.
*In the end I liked the movie, at first it was boring.* (orden raro) At first it was boring, but in the end I liked the movie. At first = al principio; in the end = al final.
*I studied and I met my friends and I went home and…* First I studied. Then I met my friends. After that, I went home. Repetir solo and hace el texto plano; usa secuenciadores.

8) Mini-práctica

  1. Completa con while / meanwhile / whereas:
    a) I was cleaning the kitchen ______ my brother was taking out the trash.
    b) I love horror films, ______ my partner prefers comedies.
    c) She was studying for the exam. ______, her friends were partying on the beach.
    d) ______ I was waiting for the bus, I realised I had forgotten my wallet.
    e) My older brother is very outgoing, ______ my younger sister is quite shy.
  2. Reescribe usando un conector más natural:
    a) I was cooking and my friend was setting the table at the same time.
    → ____________________________________________

    b) I like working in the morning. My colleague likes working at night.
    → ____________________________________________

    c) I called the hotel. At the same time, my friend wrote them an email.
    → ____________________________________________
  3. Ordena y completa con secuenciadores (first, then, after that, in the end):
We got lost. We checked the map. We asked a local for directions. We finally found the restaurant.
→ ______, we got lost. ______, we checked the map. ______, we asked a local for directions. ______, we found the restaurant.
  4. Corrige si es necesario:
    a) *Meanwhile I was walking home, it started to snow.*
    b) *At first I hated the job, but in the end I still hate it.* (¿es lógico?)
    c) *My parents are strict, meanwhile my uncle is very relaxed.*
    d) *Whereas I was driving, I saw an accident.*
Debe incluir:
    • Al menos 2 secuenciadores (first, then, later, in the end…).
    • 1 ejemplo con while (simultaneidad).
