B2 - Intermedio Alto · Unidad 1: Tiempos perfectos y relato avanzado

had been + -ing duración antes de un pasado causa de un resultado visible for, since, how long Past Perfect vs Past Perfect Continuous

Ejemplo:
She was tired because she had been working all day.

A) Afirmativa

PersonaEjemplo
I / you / he / she / it / we / they I had been studying English for two years before I moved to Canada.
They had been waiting for an hour when the bus finally arrived.

B) Negativa

had not been (hadn’t been) + -ing

She hadn’t been sleeping well, so she was very tired.
We had not been working together for long when the project ended.

C) Interrogativa

Had + sujeto + been + -ing…?

Had you been waiting long before he called?
Had they been living there for a long time?

Estudio antes de mudarse She had been studying French for three years before she moved to Paris. Llevaba 3 años estudiando antes de mudarse.
Trabajo antes de renunciar He had been working at that company for ten years when he quit.

They were exhausted because they had been running for an hour.
(estaban exhaustos ← habían estado corriendo)

The ground was wet because it had been raining.

We had been talking for only five minutes when the phone rang.
They had been driving all night when they finally found a hotel.

A) Marcadores frecuentes

MarcadorUso típicoEjemplo
for + periodo duración: for two hours, for a long time She had been reading for two hours before she fell asleep.
since + punto en el tiempo desde: since 2010, since Monday They had been living there since 2010 when the company moved.
how long para preguntar duración How long had you been working there before you left?
because introduce causa / explicación He was angry because they had been ignoring him.
when / by the time conecta con el otro momento pasado By the time we met, she had been travelling for months.

B) Past Perfect vs Past Perfect Continuous

EnfoquePast Perfect (simple)Past Perfect Continuous
Resultado vs actividad She had written three emails before lunch.
(resultado: 3 correos escritos)
She had been writing emails all morning.
(actividad continua, esfuerzo, duración)
Causa de un estado He was tired because he had worked a lot.
(trabajo como evento completo)
He was tired because he had been working all day.
(pone más énfasis en el proceso largo)
Acción puntual vs acción larga They had finished the project before the deadline.
(hecho: proyecto terminado)
They had been working on the project for months.

*She had been work there for years.* She had been working there for years. Siempre been + verbo en -ing.
*They had been to work all day.* They had been working all day. No se usa been to work aquí; es acción continua, no lugar.
*I was tired because I had been to run.* I was tired because I had been running. Después de been va running, no to run.
*How long you had been waiting?* How long had you been waiting?
*I had been knowing him for years.* I had known him for years. Verbos de estado (know, like, love) normalmente no usan forma continua en este tipo de estructuras.
