Ejemplo:
When I arrived, they had left.
A) Afirmativa
had + past participle (para todas las personas)
| Persona | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| I / you / he / she / it / we / they | I had finished my homework before dinner. They had left when we arrived. |
B) Negativa
had not (hadn’t) + past participle
She hadn’t seen the film before.
We had not visited London before 2019.
C) Interrogativa
Had + sujeto + past participle…?
Had you studied English before you moved to Canada?
Had they met before the party?
|---|---|---|
| Primero A, luego B | When we arrived at the cinema, the film had already started. | A: the film had started (Past Perfect). B: we arrived (Past Simple). |
| Primero A, luego B | She had finished her exam before the teacher collected the papers. | A: had finished (antes). B: collected (después). |
2) Experiencias o estados anteriores a un momento pasado
He was nervous because he had never flown before.
They felt tired because they had worked all day.
I arrived late at the airport. I had forgotten my passport and I had to go back home.
| Marcador | Uso | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| before | “antes de” otro momento pasado. | I had left before he arrived. |
| After we had eaten, we went for a walk. |
| by the time | cuando llegó el momento X, ya había pasado Y. | By the time we got there, the shop had closed. |
| already | ya había pasado. | She had already finished when I called. |
| just | acción que ocurrió poco antes. | They had just left when we arrived. |
| I had never seen snow before that day. |
B) Past Simple vs Past Perfect
| Situación | Past Simple | Past Perfect |
|---|---|---|
| Eventos en secuencia normal | I arrived at home and then I had dinner. (Primero llegué, después cené: orden claro por and then). |
| Resaltar qué pasó primero | *When I arrived, they left.* (¿Quién salió primero? Puede sonar ambiguo.) | When I arrived, they had left. (Primero se fueron ellos, luego yo llegué.) |
| Causa anterior a un estado pasado | *He was tired because he worked all day.* | He was tired because he had worked all day. |
|---|---|---|
| *When I had arrived, they left.* | When I arrived, they had left. |
| *He had went home before midnight.* | He had gone home before midnight. | Past Perfect requiere past participle (gone), no pasado simple (went). |
| *I had seen him yesterday.* | I saw him yesterday. | Si hay un time expression concreto (yesterday, last week), normalmente usas Past Simple. |
| *He was tired because he had works all day.* | He was tired because he had worked all day. |
| *We hadn’t never visited London before.* | We had never visited London before. / We hadn’t visited London before. | Evita la doble negación en inglés. |
6) Mini-práctica
- Completa con Past Perfect o Past Simple según corresponda:
a) When we ______ (get) to the station, the train ______ (already / leave).
b) She was tired because she ______ (not / sleep) well the night before.
c) After they ______ (finish) dinner, they ______ (go) for a walk.
d) I ______ (see) the film in 2020, so I ______ (not / want) to see it again in 2022.
e) By the time I ______ (call) him, he ______ (already / go) to bed. - Reescribe usando Past Perfect para indicar qué pasó primero:
a) I arrived at the party. Then I met John. (When…)
b) She turned on the TV. First she finished her homework. (After…)
c) I bought the book. Then I realised it was in Spanish. (I realised…) - Elige la opción correcta (had + participio o Past Simple):
a) When we got home, we realised someone (had broken / broke) the window.
b) They (hadn’t visited / didn’t visit) the museum before that day.
c) When I was a child, we (moved / had moved) to another city in 2005.
a) When I arrived, they left.
b) When I arrived, they had left.
Ejemplo de inicio: When I arrived at the airport, I realised I had forgotten my passport.
Respuestas ejemplo (orientativas):
1) a) got / had already left · b) hadn’t slept · c) had finished / went · d) saw / didn’t want · e) called / had already gone
2) a) When I arrived at the party, I had already met John. / mejor: When I met John, I had just arrived at the party.
b) After she had finished her homework, she turned on the TV.
c) I realised the book was in Spanish after I had bought it.
