Question tags (isn’t it?, don’t you?)
• You’re tired, aren’t you?
• She doesn’t like coffee, does she?
| Paso | Regla | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Busca el auxiliar | Verbo to be, modal (can, will…), have auxiliar, o do/does/did. | You are late, … They will come, … |
| You are late, aren’t you? You aren’t late, are you? |
| Maria is here, isn’t she? Mark and Tom live here, don’t they? |
Si no hay auxiliar visible (Present/Past Simple), usamos do/does/did.
3) Present & Past Simple con question tags
A) Present Simple (do/does)
| Frase | Tag | Oración completa |
|---|---|---|
| You like coffee. | don’t you? | You like coffee, don’t you? |
| He works here. | doesn’t he? | He works here, doesn’t he? |
| They don’t smoke. | do they? | They don’t smoke, do they? |
B) Past Simple (did)
| Frase | Tag | Oración completa |
|---|---|---|
| You saw the film. | didn’t you? | You saw the film, didn’t you? |
| She didn’t call. | did she? | She didn’t call, did she? |
Recuerda que en he/she/it usamos does/doesn’t en presente, pero en la frase principal no lleva -s el verbo de la tag: doesn’t he?.
4) Verbo to be, modales y otros auxiliares
A) Verbo to be
- She is a teacher, isn’t she?
- They are not ready, are they?
- It was cold, wasn’t it?
B) Modales (can, will, should…)
- You can swim, can’t you?
- He will come, won’t he?
- We should leave, shouldn’t we?
- They must be tired, mustn’t they? (poco común, muchos nativos usan right?)
C) Present Perfect
- You have finished, haven’t you?
- She hasn’t called, has she?
5) Entonación: ¿pregunta real o solo confirmación?
- Entonación ascendente (↗): pregunta real, no estás seguro.
You’re coming, aren’t you? ↗
Nice day, isn’t it? ↘
6) Casos especiales (imperativos, let’s, I am…)
A) Imperativos
- Orden positiva: normalmente → will you?
Close the door, will you? - Orden negativa (don’t…): → will you? o won’t you?
Don’t be late, will you?
B) Let’s…
Let’s go, shall we?
C) Primera persona con I am
En la realidad, la tag normal con “I am” es “aren’t I?” (irregular):
• I’m late, aren’t I?
• I’m right, aren’t I?
7) Errores comunes
| Incorrecto | Correcto | Por qué |
|---|---|---|
| *You are Spanish, isn’t you?* | You are Spanish, aren’t you? | El pronombre debe coincidir: you → you, no you → it. |
| *He likes coffee, doesn’t he likes?* | He likes coffee, doesn’t he? |
| *She isn’t here, isn’t she?* | She isn’t here, is she? | Frase negativa → tag afirmativa. |
| *You can swim, do you?* | You can swim, can’t you? |
| *Let’s go, will we?* | Let’s go, shall we? |
