Future forms: will / going to / present continuous
| Forma | Estructura | Ejemplos |
|---|---|---|
| will | Afirm: Sujeto + will + base verb Neg: Sujeto + won’t + base verb Preg: Will + sujeto + base verb…? | I will call you later. She won’t come tonight. Will they help us? |
| be going to | Afirm: Sujeto + am/is/are going to + base verb Neg: Sujeto + am not / isn’t / aren’t going to + base verb Preg: Am/Is/Are + sujeto + going to + base verb…? | I’m going to study tonight. He isn’t going to buy a car. Are you going to travel this year? |
| Present Continuous (futuro) | Afirm: Sujeto + am/is/are + V-ing Neg: Sujeto + am not / isn’t / aren’t + V-ing Preg: Am/Is/Are + sujeto + V-ing…? | I’m meeting my friends tomorrow. She isn’t working on Friday. Are they coming to the party? |
Todas pueden usar marcadores de futuro: tomorrow, next week, in two days, tonight…
3) Cuándo usar will
A) Decisiones en el momento de hablar
- We don’t have milk. — I will go to the shop.
- It’s cold. I will close the window.
B) Ofertas y promesas
- I will help you with your homework.
- I won’t tell anyone, I promise.
- Don’t worry, I will call you tomorrow.
C) Predicciones / opiniones sobre el futuro
- I think it will be a great party.
- One day, humans will live on Mars.
- He won’t pass the exam. He never studies.
Con expresiones como I think, I’m sure, probably, maybe → muy típico usar will.
4) Cuándo usar be going to
A) Planes e intenciones decididos antes de hablar
- I’m going to visit my grandparents this weekend.
- She’s going to study medicine.
- We’re going to move to a bigger house.
- Look at those clouds! It’s going to rain.
- He’s driving very fast. He’s going to have an accident.
- There is no traffic. We’re going to arrive early.
- I’m meeting John at 7 p.m. tonight.
- We’re having dinner with my parents on Sunday.
- She’s flying to Paris next Monday.
• Intención general / plan: I’m going to see a movie this weekend.
• Plan organizado (entradas compradas, hora concreta): I’m seeing a movie with Ana at 8 p.m. on Friday.
Muy típico en agenda personal: I’m working on Saturday. · We’re staying at a hotel.
6) Resumen de contrastes rápidos
| Situación | Forma más natural | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Decisión en el momento | will | Oh, you’re tired. I will cook dinner. |
| Plan decidido antes | going to | I’m going to cook dinner tonight. (ya lo había pensado) |
| Plan organizado con hora/lugar | present continuous | I’m having dinner with friends at 9. |
| Predicción basada en opinión | will | I think they will win the match. |
| Predicción con evidencia ahora | going to | Look at him! He’s going to fall. |
| Promesa / oferta | will | I will help you, don’t worry. |
7) Errores comunes
| Incorrecto | Correcto | Por qué |
|---|---|---|
| *I go to travel tomorrow.* | I’m going to travel tomorrow. / I’m travelling tomorrow. |
| *I will going to study tonight.* | I’m going to study tonight. / I will study tonight. | No se mezclan will y going to juntos. |
| *I’m going to help you, don’t worry* (decisión en el momento). | I’ll help you, don’t worry. | Es una decisión espontánea → más natural will. |
| *Look! The glass will fall.* | Look! The glass is going to fall. |
| *I’m meeting to my friends tomorrow.* | I’m meeting my friends tomorrow. | Con meet no usamos to antes del objeto directo. |
