Stylistic relative clauses (non-restrictive, as/which)
Non-restrictive:
“Our CEO, who joined in 2010, has transformed the company.”
Comentario con , which:
“They ignored the initial reports, which turned out to be a serious mistake.”
Clausula con as:
“As we have seen, the policy has several unintended consequences.”
| Tipo | Forma | Ejemplo | Uso / matiz |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restrictive (definidora) | sin comas who / which / that | “The people who live on this street are very friendly.” “The report that you sent needs updating.” | Especifica de quién / de qué hablas. Elimina la cláusula y cambia el significado. |
| Non-restrictive (explicativa) | entre comas who / which (no “that”) | “My manager, who lives nearby, offered to give me a lift.” “The report, which you sent yesterday, needs updating.” |
Non-restrictive = entre comas + normalmente who/which (no “that”). Suena más cuidado y escrito.
3) “comma + which” comentando toda la oración
|---|---|---|
| Evaluar una decisión | “They decided to cut the training budget, which was a short-sighted move.” | which se refiere a toda la decisión, no a “budget”. |
| Señalar una consecuencia | “The app crashed during the live event, which caused a lot of frustration.” | Valoración + consecuencia en una sola estructura fluida. |
| Añadir contraste o matiz irónico | “He described the process as ‘simple’, which nobody in the room believed.” “They launched the feature without testing it, which was brave, to say the least.” |
| Conectores + which | “The data were incomplete, which in turn delayed the whole project.” “She refused to comment, which, in a way, made the situation even worse.” | El conector (in turn, in a way, in fact) añade aún más matiz. |
4) Cláusulas con as: referencia elegante a información conocida
|---|---|---|
| as we have seen | “As we have seen, user engagement drops after the first week.” “As we saw earlier, the first attempt was unsuccessful.” |
| as mentioned above / earlier | “The survey, as mentioned above, included over 2,000 participants.” “These findings support the hypothesis, as discussed earlier.” |
| as is often the case | “As is often the case with early-stage startups, cash flow was a major concern.” “As is usually the case, communication issues created most of the problems.” | Generalización: “como suele ocurrir”; añade tono reflexivo. |
| as is clear / as is evident | “As is clear from the data, user retention remains a challenge.” “As is evident from the results, the new method is more efficient.” | Señala evidencia en gráficos, tablas, datos. |
| as you can see | “As you can see in Figure 2, the curve flattens after six months.”
“The manager was under pressure. She had little support. She made a risky decision.”
Versión C2 con non-restrictive y ,which:
“The manager, who had little support, made a risky decision,
which ultimately saved the company.”
- as we have seen / as is often the case ayudan a guiar al lector en textos largos.
6) Errores frecuentes con non-restrictive y as/which
| Problema | Versión dudosa / incorrecta | Versión C2 mejorada |
|---|---|---|
| Usar “that” en non-restrictive | *Our CEO, that joined in 2010, has transformed the company.* | Our CEO, who joined in 2010, has transformed the company. |
| Olvidar las comas | *The report which you sent yesterday needs updating.* (aquí la intención era “el informe, que tú enviaste ayer…”) | The report, which you sent yesterday, needs updating. |
| “Which” refiriéndose a la palabra más cercana | *He failed the exam, which made the teacher angry.* (¿qué hizo enojar al profesor: el examen o el suspenso?) | He failed the exam, which made the teacher angry. (aquí en realidad “which” se refiere a la situación de suspender, pero el contexto debe dejarlo claro) o bien: He failed the exam, and this made the teacher angry. |
| Cláusulas con “as” demasiado informales | *As you know, like I said before, the results are bad.* (mezcla registros) | As mentioned above, the results are disappointing. / As you know, the results are disappointing. (para contexto más oral) |
| Redundancia en as-clauses | *As we have already seen before, the system is slow.* | As we have seen, the system is slow. / As mentioned earlier, the system is slow. |
a) The colleagues who sit near me are all developers.
b) My colleagues, who sit near me, are all developers.
c) The new policy, which was introduced last year, has had mixed results.
d) The students who fail the exam can retake it in June.
a) The company ignored the feedback from its users. This created serious trust issues.
b) They promoted him without consulting the team. That surprised everyone. - Completa con una cláusula con as apropiada (as we have seen / as is often the case / as mentioned above):
a) __________, communication problems caused most of the delays.
b) The current model, __________, has several limitations.
c) __________, early adopters played a crucial role in the product’s success. - Mejora el estilo usando non-restrictive o as/which (sin cambiar el significado básico):
a) We did a survey. It had over 3,000 participants. This gave us reliable data.
b) Many startups fail in their first year. This is something that happens very often.
c) We analysed the previous reports. We talked about them earlier in this chapter.
• uses al menos dos non-restrictive clauses con who/which;
• añadas un comentario valorativo con , which (refiriéndose a una idea entera);
• incluyas una cláusula con as… (as we have seen, as is often the case…);
• mantengas un tono formal y coherente.
Respuestas ejemplo (posibles):
1) a) R · b) NR · c) NR · d) R.
2) a) The company ignored the feedback from its users, which created serious trust issues.
b) They promoted him without consulting the team, which surprised everyone.
3) a) As is often the case, communication problems caused most of the delays.
b) The current model, as mentioned above, has several limitations.
c) As we have seen, early adopters played a crucial role in the product’s success.
