Clause packaging (embedding, nominal groups complejos)

Versión “plana”: Many students are under pressure. They have to get good results. This pressure is increasing.
Empaquetado: The increasing pressure on students to achieve good results is worrying.

Determinante artículo, posesivo, cuantificador the, a, this, those, my, several, many, a number of…
Premodificación adjetivos / nombres antes del núcleo increasing, social, technological, long-term, high-quality, online
language learning apps, consumer behaviour patterns
Núcleo (head) sustantivo principal pressure, impact, role, effect, issue, problem, trend, decision…
Postmodificación preposiciones, relativas, -ing/-ed, outras cláusulas of social media, on young people
who use smartphones daily
collected in 2020
living in urban areas
that many families face today

[The] [increasing economic] [pressure] [on families with low incomes]

that-clause como complemento del nombre the fact that many students work part-time
the idea that technology isolates people
wh-clause como complemento the question of whether social media are harmful
the issue of how data should be protected
Nombres que recogen una pregunta o “problema”.
Relativa embebida the challenges that young people face today
the policies which were introduced last year
Apposition (dos nombres juntos) the app, a widely used learning tool, …
Dr Smith, a leading researcher in the field, …
El segundo grupo nominal explica o aclara el primero.

Full: Many students work part-time, and this affects their performance.
Empaquetado: The fact that many students work part-time affects their performance.

Palabras clave para “clause packaging”: the fact that… / the idea that… / the problem of… / the question of whether…

(antes)
• Tamaño / intensidad: small, major, significant
• Tiempo general: recent, long-term, ongoing
• Tipo/clase: social, economic, educational, digital
significant social changes
recent technological developments
long-term economic pressure
Postmodificación
(después)
• Of-phrases: of young people, of the environment
• Lugar/tiempo específico: in developing countries, in recent years
• Participles / relatives: caused by…, affecting…, that occur when…
changes in working patterns
effects of social media on teenagers
policies introduced in the last decade

A rather complex social problem affecting young people in large cities
→ Premod (rather complex social) + núcleo (problem) + postmod (affecting…, in…)

Technology is changing fast. This creates pressure on workers. They have to learn new skills. The rapid technological changes are creating increasing pressure on workers to learn new skills. Dos grupos nominales complejos: rapid technological changes y increasing pressure on workers to learn new skills.
Many people work from home now. This has changed their daily routines. It has also changed their social interactions. The growth of remote work has changed people’s daily routines and social interactions. “Growth of remote work” empaqueta la primera idea.
Young people use smartphones every day. Because of this, they are constantly connected to social media. Young people’s daily use of smartphones keeps them constantly connected to social media. “Young people’s daily use of smartphones” = acción convertida en nombre.
Many students have to work. They do this while they are studying. This affects their academic performance. The need for many students to work while studying can affect their academic performance. Se empaqueta con the need for… to….

*The increasing of using social media by teenagers…* Uso incorrecto de “increasing of using”; combinación poco natural. The increasing use of social media by teenagers…
o: The fact that teenagers increasingly use social media…
*The problem that many people they cannot disconnect…* Doble sujeto (people they) y relativa mal colocada. The problem that many people cannot disconnect…
o: The problem of many people not being able to disconnect…
*The too much big social media influence…* Orden de adjetivos incorrecto y quantifier extraño. the excessive influence of social media
o: the very strong influence of social media
Falta de núcleo *The increase of in social media use…* (¿increase of qué?) The increase in social media use…
(preposición correcta y núcleo claro).
