En C1, la inversión se usa para dar énfasis y sonar más formal o expresivo: Rarely do I…, Not until…, Never have I….
Normal: I had never seen such a film before.
Enfático: Never had I seen such a film before.
(auxiliar + sujeto).
2) ¿Qué es la inversión exactamente?
En inglés, la estructura normal es:
Sujeto + verbo auxiliar + verbo principal
I have never seen that. · We will start soon.
Never have I seen that.
Only then did we realise the problem.
|---|---|---|
| I have never been so surprised. | Never have I been so surprised. | “Nunca había estado tan sorprendido.” |
| I rarely see her these days. | Rarely do I see her these days. | “Rara vez la veo hoy en día.” |
| We had hardly finished when they arrived. | Hardly had we finished when they arrived. | “Apenas habíamos terminado cuando llegaron.” |
| She had scarcely arrived when the phone rang. | Scarcely had she arrived when the phone rang. | “Apenas había llegado cuando sonó el teléfono.” |
| We had no sooner sat down than the lights went out. | No sooner had we sat down than the lights went out. |
Patrón: adverbio negativo + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo principal.
4) Not until, Only when, Only after…
Not until…, Only when…, Only after…, Only then….
| Patrón | Ejemplo con inversión | Comentario |
|---|---|---|
| Not until + cláusula | Not until I moved to London did I realise how expensive it was. |
| Only when + cláusula | Only when she left the company did they understand her value. | Énfasis en el momento concreto. |
| Only after + sintagma | Only after the meeting did we discover the mistake. |
| Only then | We tried several solutions. Only then did we realise the real problem. | Retoma la idea anterior (“solo entonces…”). |
Ojo: si not until / only when va en medio de la oración, NO hay inversión:
I didn’t realise it until I moved to London. (normal)
5) So / Such + adjetivo/sustantivo + that (versión enfática)
Puedes enfatizar con so / such de dos formas:
- Normal: It was so difficult that many students failed.
- Enfática: So difficult was it that many students failed.
| Normal | Con inversión |
|---|---|
| The film was so boring that we left early. | So boring was the film that we left early. |
| It was such a complicated problem that nobody could solve it. | Such a complicated problem was it that nobody could solve it. |
|---|---|---|
| *Never I have seen such a view.* | El auxiliar debe ir antes del sujeto. | Never have I seen such a view. |
| *Not until I moved I realised the problem.* | Falta el auxiliar “did” en la parte principal. | Not until I moved did I realise the problem. |
| *So was difficult the exam that…* | Orden incorrecto: adjetivo después del verbo. | So difficult was the exam that… |
| En oral informal, mejor: I’ve never seen anything like that.
| No digas: *Happy am I today* (suena extraño). Mejor: I’m very happy today. (o lo dejas para poesía 😄). |
