Registro formal vs neutral (e-mails, informes)
|---|---|---|
| Correo a empresa / institución (no conoces el nombre) | Dear Sir or Madam, (Británico tradicional, cada vez menos usado, pero válido) Cierre: Yours faithfully, + nombre | To whom it may concern, (muy formal y general) o directamente un saludo neutro si sabes el departamento, p.ej. Dear Admissions Team, |
| Correo formal (conoces el nombre) | Dear Mr Smith, Dear Ms Johnson, Cierre: Yours sincerely, Best regards, | Dear John, Hello Anna, Cierre: Best regards, Kind regards, |
| Email neutral / semi-formal (compañeros, profes con confianza) | Dear Professor Brown, Dear Team, Sin emojis, tono respetuoso. | Hi John, Hello everyone, Cierre: Best, Thanks, |
|---|---|---|
| ask | request | Neutral: I’m writing to ask for more information. Formal: I am writing to request further information. |
| help | assistance | Neutral: Thank you for your help. Formal: Thank you for your assistance. |
| say sorry | apologise | Neutral: I’m really sorry for the delay. Formal: I apologise for the delay. |
| give | provide | Neutral: Could you give me more details? Formal: Could you provide further details? |
| need | require | Neutral: We need more time. Formal: We require additional time. |
| buy | purchase | Neutral: We want to buy new equipment. Formal: We intend to purchase new equipment. |
4) Contracciones y phrasal verbs
A) Contracciones
- Formal: evitar contracciones
I am writing to inform you that…
We do not accept late applications. - Neutral: se permiten contracciones
I’m writing to let you know that…
We don’t accept late applications.
B) Phrasal verbs vs verbos simples
- Neutral: phrasal verbs muy comunes
find out, put off, go on, come up with - Más formal: verbo “simple” equivalente
discover, postpone, continue, propose / suggest
| Elemento | E-mail formal | E-mail neutral |
|---|---|---|
| Saludo | Dear Ms García, | Hi Laura, |
| Frase de apertura | I am writing to enquire about… I would like to apply for… | I’m writing because I wanted to ask you about… Just a quick message to… |
Moreover,… However,… | Párrafos cortos, estilo más directo: First,… Also,… But,… |
| Frase final | I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you in advance for your help. | Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again for your help. |
| Despedida | Yours sincerely, / Best regards, | Best, / Thanks, |
6) Errores comunes de registro
| Incorrecto | Problema | Versión mejorada |
|---|---|---|
| Hey Mr Smith, I wanna ask u something… | Demasiado coloquial para un profesor / jefe. “wanna/u” no son adecuados. | Dear Mr Smith, I would like to ask you something… |
| Hi Sir or Madam, | Mezcla de informal (Hi) con formal (Sir or Madam). | Dear Sir or Madam, |
| I’m writing to request some info. (email formal) | “info” es demasiado informal; mejor “information”. | I am writing to request some information. |
| I would like to know about it. And I want to say thanks. | Repetitivo y poco natural en registro formal. | I would like to request further details. I would also like to thank you for your time. |
| Dear Maria, I am writing to apply for the job. | Dear Maria, I am writing to apply for the position. Best regards, |
a) I’m writing to let you know that the meeting has been cancelled.
b) I am writing to inform you that the meeting has been cancelled.
c) Thanks a lot for your help!
d) I would be very grateful for your assistance.
e) We require additional information before we can proceed.

b) (I wanna / I would like to) apply for the position of sales assistant.

d) (Best / Cheers),
e) (See you / I look forward to hearing from you.) - Reescribe en registro más formal:

b) I’m sorry for sending this so late.
c) Can you give me some details about the timetable?
d) I need more time to finish the project.

b) I apologise for any inconvenience caused.
c) I require some additional information regarding the presentation.
d) I look forward to hearing from you.
